October 4, 2011
Today I woke up, got ready, and left the house around 8:30. I had my Weaving the Tale class from 9:00-10:30. Right now, we are reading The Decameron by Boccaccio and I am really enjoying it. The writing is so lighthearted and full of storytelling so they are very easy and fun to read. I then had a three-hour break between that class and Italian. First, I set out on a quest to find canned pumpkin. I decided that I wanted to try to make pumpkin bread sometime this fall but didn’t know if I could get canned pumpkin. True, I could use a real pumpkin but it would make things a lot more difficult, especially when I am not in my own kitchen. My professors told me to try this store called Old England so I set out to find it during my break. It ended up being no trouble at all to find and was so much fun to look around in. It had the setup of an old-fashioned goods store, like what I have seen in movies and read about in books like Little House on the Prairie. They had all sorts of American and English comfort foods and material goods as well. And they had CANNED PUMPKIN! I was so excited to find it! So, sometime soon, I am going to try to use my mom’s American recipe and bake pumpkin bread here in Florence…wish me luck! That didn’t end up taking me very long so I headed back to school and finished up my Italian homework. I still had quite a while after that, so I decided to go home to drop off my backpack, computer and my books from my first class. I had lunch and relaxed at home before returning for Italian.
I had Italian from 1:30-2:45 and we reviewed for the quiz we have on Thursday. After Italian, I rushed off to San Lorenzo to meet my Medici class at 3:00. We toured the church of San Lorenzo and talked about the art and architecture of it for about an hour and a half. It was very interesting and I am starting to understand and recognize the works of some of the more famous artists! It is also the church in which the entire Medici family is buried, as well as Donatello, so that made it all the more interesting. I really liked San Lorenzo and will most likely return there because an hour and a half wasn’t enough (wow, I can’t believe I am saying that!) At 4:30, Jodie let us off for a half an hour break before we reconvened for another hour in the classroom to go over some logistics for the class and for a few students to give their oral presentations. We finished up around 6:00 and I was finally able to head home. At home I was greeted by Marco, who turned 7 months old today! While I was saying hi to him, he reached for me and Daniella handed him over to me. We definitely have a bond! I got to hold him and play with him for quite a while and, when Daniella reached for him to come back to her, he grabbed onto me as tight as he could. She tried to take him back a couple of times and he just wouldn’t let go! I was so happy :) :) Finally, I did need to get some homework done and Silvia (Daniella’s daughter-in-law, Marco’s Mom) was coming soon so Daniella pried him away from me. In the hour before dinner, I was able to finish up my homework for Weaving the Tale tomorrow and do some of my reflectory for my Dante class.
For dinner tonight we had GNOCCHI AL PESTO!! It was absolutely delicious and I definitely had seconds. For our main dish, we had hamburgers (not like a traditional American hamburger but fairly similar, without the bun and cheese and condiments). Daniella realized last night that I like hamburger (she hadn’t understood that before for some reason) so she made it for me straight away! It was very delicious and it was nice to have some meat after such a long time! For dessert, because it was the festival of San Francesco or something, Daniella had made a traditional pastry with grapes that was SOOO delicious. It was quite a satisfying meal :)
After dinner, I finished up my reflectory and then talked to Franzi about things to do in London for a little while. It made me so excited for London! I can’t believe that we will be there in less than two weeks! I can’t even believe how quickly the time is flying…once fall break is over we are halfway done with our time in Florence. Now THAT is hard to believe. Wow. Anyway, I am pretty tired so I’d better wrap this up. Tomorrow I have to meet my Dante group at 9:00; I have my Dante class at 10:30 and then my Weaving the Tale class at 1:00. At 2:30, I am done for the day, so that will be VERY nice, especially after having class until 6:00 this evening. I hope you all are having a wonderful Tuesday!
Love, Kari
Marco and me :)
