This morning in Italian we learned more of the past tense, finally! I feel so much more confident about speaking Italian after today! Now I just really need to practice. And, of course, continue learning other parts of the language. But, I do feel much better about it now :) Italian class was so much fun, as usual. We laugh so much and it’s really a great environment to be learning a new language. After class, Franzi and I took the bus home for lunch and to drop off our school stuff before we left for Fiesole. Our whole group met at 2:00 and caught the bus out to Fiesole, which is about 20 minutes by bus outside of the city. In fact, it is up on a hill/mountain/whatever you want to call it, above Florence and the view is the most spectacular yet. Fiesole is an ancient Etruscan/Roman city that was built long before Florence. We went to visit the archeological museum and ruins of Fiesole this afternoon. We had an archeologist lead us around the site and explain everything to us, which was fabulous. One of the best-preserved ruins is a Roman theatre, which I, of course, was very excited about! She began talking about Greek and Roman theatre history and I wanted to chime in because I knew all about it! Thanks Jeanne and Theatre History :) Also on the site were the ruins of a Roman Bath as well as a Roman temple, underneath which are the ruins of an Etruscan temple. Very cool and you could walk in and around all of it, seeing everything up close. After touring the archeological site, we visited the museum as well, which was also very cool to see all the artifacts they had found in and around Fiesole.
After the our archeological tour of Fiesole, we all headed to the square where we celebrated Willi’s 21st birthday with incredible cream puffs which Kate, one of our professors, says are from the best bakery in the area. I will definitely be returning to that bakery. They were DELICIOUS! I also will be returning to Fiesole a few times at least. You can hike up a big hill and, at the top, it is said to be the most stunning view of the city of Florence anywhere. Fiesole is a very quiet and quaint town as well, not overrun by tourists. A good place to go to get away. And, apparently, there is a lot of good hiking around the area. I will have to explore it some more soon; maybe when the weather gets a bit cooler.
After Fiesole, we all headed home. My family had dinner a little earlier than usual. We began with pasta shells with eggplant and tomatoes, followed by a spinach quiche and then kiwis for dessert (which I had two of because they are especially good here!) So yummy and filling after a long day of walking. Now I’m studying for my second Italian quiz tomorrow and just relaxing the rest of the evening. It’s been a pretty tiring day. Wish me luck on my quiz!
All my love,
Kari
